Cockroach Baits
Cockroach baits are one of the most popular and effective ways to get rid of cockroaches.
The three most common types of cockroach baits include: liquids, gels, and solids. Cockroach baits are made up of a combination of pesticide active ingredients that are toxic to roaches.
How do they work? Liquids and gels can be applied directly to the surface where cockroaches have been most active. Liquid and gel bait is typically applied in the form of a convenient syringe. Meanwhile, solid cockroach bait is housed in an enclosed baiting station in order to protect pets and children.
Once the bait is laid down, the cockroach consumes and ingests the bait. The toxin then begins to affect the cockroach. Once the cockroach returns to the nest, it then defecates and eventually dies.
Any other cockroach who consumes the faeces, carcass, or saliva of the infected cockroach will also become infected. Although, direct contact is often enough to spread the infection as well.
As a result, this creates a cycle of cockroaches becoming infected and passing on the infection with other roaches. Best of all? It's quick and easy to replenish the bait and enjoy long-lasting relief all year round.
Control Bomb
Also known as fumigation, this is a more traditional way to get rid of cockroaches. Yet, it's still effective in the right circumstances.
How it works is simple. It involves placing the control bomb in a room and releasing the mist into the air. Over the course of several hours, the mist falls down from the initial point of release and spreads across the room, making direct contact with any surfaces and cockroaches that happen to be there. As a result, any cockroaches caught in the line of fire are eliminated.
Control bombs contain similar active ingredients to those found in cockroach baits. This means the affected cockroaches will become infected and infect any other roaches they make contact with. Even if a cockroach was not in the firing line at the time of treatment, if they make contact with any of the affected surfaces, they too will become infected.
It's important that you use control bombs safely. For starters, you should try to cover as many surfaces as possible. Secondly, remove as much furniture, toys, equipment, and appliances from the treated room as well. And, finally, make sure you evacuate the room for the entire course of the treatment.
How many control bombs do you need? Generally speaking, one can will be enough to treat an average size room (4m x 4m floor area). Larger spaces may require more than one can to treat the entire room.
Bug Spray
Sometimes, when you come face-to-face with a cockroach, you just want the pest gone for good – quickly.
Easy. Just grab your trusty bug spray and go to town on the critter. Most commercially available bug sprays are able to control a variety of pests, including cockroaches. Some cockroach sprays are designed to be used as a preventive measure. So you can apply the product to possible entry points around the home and areas of high activity.
Of course, always read the safety directions before use. While most bug sprays are low odour, and safe to use around pets and children; it's better to be safe than sorry.
Spring Cleaning
When cockroaches enter your home or business, they're usually looking for just a few things – food and water.
Reducing the presence of leftover food, waste, and surface stains can help make your place less enticing for cockroaches to visit. Also, be sure to check for any leaking plumbing fixtures, as moisture may attract cockroaches to your property.
Other Cleaning Tips Include:
- Put away leftover food before going to bed
- Regularly wipe down all surfaces including tables, benches, and countertops
- Empty your rubbish and recycling frequently – place a lid over your bins as well.
- Vacuum your floors regularly – be sure to mop floorboards often too.
- Don't keep pet bowls full of food around – or, if you do, place the bowl in a shallow pan full of water to create a 'moat.'
- Seal up possible entry points – i.e. gaps between doors and windows, place mesh over exposed drainage fixtures.
