What do the experts say most babies measuring small?

If you're due to have a browse because your baby's measured small, remainder assured: the big majority of scans will be absolutely fine!

Professor Basky Thilganathan, a Consultant Obstetrician and spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) also wants to make it articulate that most small babies are totally healthy, and that size is only used to aid medical pros keep an eye on the infant'south wellbeing.

"Virtually women who have a small infant or a large baby are having a healthy small baby or big baby," he tells MFM. "Part of the assessment of the scan is to look at the wellbeing of the baby irrespective of the size.

"It ordinarily involves something called the dopplar assessment, then that's a blood menstruation cess, looking at the amniotic fluid around the baby, etc. Again, this is about the wellbeing of the baby irrespective of the size.

"The reason that is important [to note] is that most minor babies are perfectly healthy. Most unhealthy babies are non usually small, either.

"Even though at that place is an association between being small and having problems, that association is quite weak. Information technology is used as a signal for us to decide who needs special tests."

"Often the scans are fine," stresses MFM's resident GP, Dr Philippa Kaye, also. "Substantially, if the babe is smaller than expected, they then check the blood menstruation in the placenta."

Just in rare cases will there be something not quite right with the placenta. In that case, yous'd monitored with more scans – and go from there.

'Everyone idea I was only well-nigh 6/seven months when I was merely about due, I had a small-scale bump and anytime I saw a new consultant or midwife I was rushed for a scan because I was pocket-sized for dates.

"They idea mayhap my placenta wasn't feeding the infant properly and were going to give me a C-department. Only the scans always showed that everything was fine, there was enough fluid around the baby etc, and I was left to accept the baby normally.

"So she was overdue, so the solar day before I was due to exist induced I was sent for withal another browse and they said the baby was just nigh 5lb and then it would exist ok to go alee with inducing me the next day… the next day she was born at 7lb 2oz!!!

"So I don't think she put on all that weight overnight! Anyway, everyone's story is different, but I just wanted to reassure you you that just because you are small, it does not hateful that your baby is as well modest or unhealthy or anything like that.
